The immensity of unemployment in the Wonder of Asia

(August 09, 2011 - w3lankaA large number of youth were seen gathered yesterday near Bambalapitiya Police Field headquarters to get an application for a job in Korea. An application form is not a job. It is just a hope for a decent living for the umpteenth sans a handful of superstars.

Last week, a young graduate known to this writer left for a unskilled or semi-skilled job in Korea. Perhaps he will be lucky to return with a saving that he can use as a capital back in the home country to start a self-employment or a part-time business as he joins the public service with his queue-frustrated colleagues.

Local media reported that there was chaos among the prospective applicants and the Police had to intervene in controlling the crowd.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau announced that the Korean language test admissions will be issued to all applicants until August 11 from 29 centers island-wide and applicants do not need to come to Colombo to take the test and show the world the immensity of the unemployment or underemployment problem of the island that is otherwise shown as the wonder of Asia. Their act of lifting the statistical skirt of the government amounts nothing but treachery in this home of extreme patriots.

Each year, around 9,000 Sri Lankan youth get opportunity to get a job in Korea for a dozen times higher pay compared to what is paid in the homeland to work of that sort. These jobs are given under an agreement between the governments of Sri Lanka and Korea. Government manipulates this job market for political mileage.

Korean dream is one of the secrets behind the support the government gains from the youth.
