Terrorizing and chasing away of Jaffna people to slash their parliamentary representation

(August 01, 2011 - w3lanka) Gnanasundaram Kuganathan, the news editor of Jaffna based Uthayan newspaper of Sri Lanka was brutally assaulted on head with a steel bar by an unknown group to media. The elderly journalist, a father of five, is still in serious condition, hospital sources say.

Meanwhile, President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday instructed the Police Chief to immediately launch an investigation and submit a report on the assault, President’s Media Director General Bandula Jayasekera said.

Is this necessary? Why do we maintain a police with public money if a Presidential order is needed to conduct an investigation regarding a criminal act.

It is clear that the powers that commit crimes in Jaffna are more powerful than the police. Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam was also more powerful than the police in the past. But it is no more in power. Then who are these powers? Answer is direct and no need to mention.

When an over action embarrasses the government, bigwigs always order investigations. Nobody including themselves take them seriously. Yet they are good to be published internationally so that the government can appear clean.

The investigation most recently ordered was the one regarding the assault on the political meeting of the Tamil National Alliance that was held with the participation of five MPs. Who cares now about the result?

BBC journalist Mailwaganam Nimalarajan was killed 11 years back and the investigations were ordered in the same way due to international pressure. Probes led to identify the culprits of whom the leader who was connected to Minister Devananda was never arrested. Impunity is fixed on many such heinous crimes that took place in Jaffna.

This is the root cause of terror that chased people out from Jaffna. Now the administration tries to take back four parliamentary seats from Jaffna district and distribute them among several Sinhala dominated districts. Mathara, Kurunegala, Rathnapura and Badulla are not the districts where the Tamils that fled from Jaffna resettled. Where have these Tamils that are wanted by the government not to be represented have gone?

If a massive number of population such as 300,000 migrated out of a district that was considered a cultural epicenter of a minority community, it should be taken into serious consideration of the world community. The remedy is no mean the slash of political representation of that community.

Recall the blunder in how the government politicians miscalculated the number of civilians in the government proclaimed no fire zone at the final stage of war against Tamil militants in 2009.
