Sri Lanka Chief Justice's husband in bribery net
Kariyawasam is charged with corruption in relation to investing NSB funds in purchasing shares of The Finance Company knowing that the deal would cause loss to NSB.
Kariyawasam involved in acquiring 7,863,362 shares of The Finance Company for Rs 391,136,544.00. The NSB has purchased 13.02% stake of The Finance Company at around Rs. 49.74 a share when the market price was around Rs.30-31 a share. The transaction was later cancelled by the government
He is also accused of suggesting his name and another person's name to the board of directors of the NSB, knowing that it would bring him undue privileges.
The Bribery Commission said to courts that 26 witnesses and 51 documents would be submitted pertaining to the prosecution.
The hearing was fixed on February 28, 2013.
Pradeep Kariyawasam was former Chairman of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, and a member of the Board of Directors of Lanka Hospitals Corporation PLC.
He is the husband of Shirani Bandaranaike, the Chief Justice of Sri Lanka. Serious conflict of interest issues relating to her were raised when Justice Bandaranayake was appointed as the Chief Justice.
Journalist Uvindu Kurukulasuriya then wrote, "The Chief Justice must explain how her husband was appointed Chairman of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, and a member of the Board of Directors of Lanka Hospitals Corporation PLC. How was he also appointed Chairman of the National Savings Bank? Had he applied for the job? Was he interviewed? Who were the other applicants? Weren’t there any other qualified applicants other than her husband? She must also explain how these things are consistent with international standards concerning judicial independence. If she cannot, she or her husband must resign. After all, “Caesar’s wife must be above suspicion.”

A good lesson to everyone. Integrity and Accountability are not jeweleries just to wear to climb the social/power ladder - But they are indeed, and should be part of people's lives from the beginning. Had these been core practices of Mr. Kariyawasam and Dr. Bandaranayake, they wouldn't have ended up in this horrid trap, set by that 4th class lumpen in the Temple-trees.
