A simmering crisis seems to be developing in Sri Lanka as the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court are engaged in interpreting constitution as a conflict of interests is brewing between the legislature and the judiciary. Court of Appeal of Sri Lanka yesterday decided to forward four petitions filed seeking a writ order against the parliamentary select committee (PSC) probing the impeachment of the country's Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake to the Supreme Court for an interpretation on the constitution. Six petitions had been filed before the Appeals Court  against the PSC. Four of them challenge the constitutionality of the PSC while the other two question the integrity of Ministers Wimal Weerawans and Rajitha Senarathna as members of PSC. Sri Lanka Bribery and Corruption Commission has framed bribery and corruption charges against the former Chairman of National Savings Bank (NSB) Pradeep Kariyawasam before Colombo magistrate court. Kariyawasam is charged with corruption in relation to investing NSB funds in purchasing shares of The Finance Company knowing that the deal would cause loss to NSB. Kariyawasam involved in acquiring 7,863,362 shares of The Finance Company for Rs 391,136,544.00. The NSB has purchased 13.02% stake of The Finance Company at around Rs. 49.74 a share when the market price was around Rs.30-31 a share. The transaction was later cancelled by the government He is also accused of suggesting his name and another person's name to the board of directors of the NSB, knowing that it would bring him undue privileges.
